Disused green space transformed into a natural play area in Manchester

Groundwork Manchester, Salford, Stockport, Tameside and Trafford is an environmental regeneration charity in Greater Manchester which supports communities and individuals to live and work more sustainably.

Working with the Love Old Trafford community group, they had a vision in 2017 to transform a disused and unloved piece of green space into a sustainable natural play area in Manchester.

With funding from Postcode Local Trust the group were able to achieve this and more:

  • The improvement of the derelict open space into a wonderful community play space which equates to 365m2 of land improved, directly benefiting 100 households with a further 1,000 households estimated to indirectly benefit from such a locally accessible green space. The green space includes new paths, a sundial, recycled plastic stepping stone logs, new tree planting and art work
  • The involvement of more than 80 young people directly in the project which equates to more than 140 hours of volunteering time
  • The planning and delivery of 13 project meetings, events, workshops and sessions, involving 3 key stakeholders and more than 130 members of the community with a further 100 households directly engaged through these events
  • Groundwork Manchester, Salford, Stockport, Tameside and Trafford
